The Birds of Lundy – Updates to the Species Accounts

Last modified: 1 September 2009

Updates to the species accounts in The Birds of Lundy will be posted annually, based on the records for the previous year in the LFS Logbook, or when significant new information comes to light from the latest observations on the island, or from additional historical information that may come to light. Factual clarifications and corrections will also be posted here.

If you would like to receive emails announcing updates to the species accounts, please click on the box at the bottom of the menu on the left-hand side of this page.

For the purpose of these updates the Systematic List is divided into six sections:

Wildfowl to Spoonbill
Raptors to phalaropes
Skuas to auks
Pallas's Sandgrouse to Waxwing
Wren to Firecrest
Flycatchers to buntings

Abbreviations:
BBRC – British Birds Rarities Committee

DBRC – Devon Birds Records Committee
DBWPS – Devon Bird Watching & Preservation Society
LFS – Lundy Field Society

Recent taxonomic decisions by the British Ornithologists' Union (BOU)

The BOU Records Committee (BOURC) published its 36th Report in Ibis in November 2007. This included changes to The British List, which was used as the baseline for species names and sequence in The Birds of Lundy. The BOURC has adopted a new sequence for ‘shanks’ and sandpipers (affecting species appearing in The Birds of Lundy pp. 110-113), plus changes to both the scientific names and sequence of gulls (affecting species accounts on pp. 117-128). In addition, the scientific name for Willow Tit (p. 228) is amended from Poecile montanus to Poecile montana. Full details are available from the BOU website: www.bou.org.uk (select 'The British List'; from the side-bar menu, then click on 'BOURC reports', then '# 36' for the links to download the abstract or full text in either pdf or html format).

For convenience, further Updates on this website will refer to both the 'new' scientific names and those used in the book; the sequence of species will follow the latest recommendations for The British List.
